However, as time goes on, it won't hurt if she sends letters to the schools she is interested in to tell them she is still interested and uncommitted. That way, when openings happen, the adcoms will often turn to the sure thing, as long as she is considered a viable candidate at their school. So she can go ahead and send a letter of interest to all the schools she's considering—-just a short, friendly letter saying that she's still interested. If she gets to the end of the interview season without any interviews, then it's ok to reach out to adcoms and find out if there is an obvious flaw in her application.
